The Mt Hope Huskies Boys hockey team traveled to West Warwick Friday night for a chilly matchup vs the West Warwick/EWG Co-op. Opening minutes, the Huskies get to work on the power-play. Cycling the puck down low, Sophomore Cam Rancourt passes the puck to Junior Jack Dolan who feeds Junior Ryan Cordeiro. Cordeiro buries it for an early 1-0 Huskies lead. Later in the first period, the Huskies give up three goals in a three minute span and find themselves down 3-1. GUT-CHECK time. Pack it in and go home or believe in your team's ability to never give up and always have a chance to come back. The Huskies choose the latter. Senior goaltender Kyle Depoy locks in between the pipes and makes save after save helping lead his team to the comeback. Jack Dolan closes the gap by stealing the puck from a defender in the offensive zone, taking it to the net and banging it home to close the gap to 3-2 at the end of the first. In the second period, WW/EWG responds to take a 4-2 lead, but Rancourt scores for the Huskies to cut the lead to 4-3 heading in to the 3rd period and a fresh sheet of ice. In a wild back and forth third period, this one came down to goaltending. Depoy puts up the brick wall and repeatedly denies WW/EWG, finishing the night with a heavy workload making 37 saves. On the other end of the ice, Cordeiro wins an offensive zone face-off. Dolan swoops in and buries a laser top corner for the equalizer. 4-4. Back and forth action, both teams having chances. Rancourt steals the puck down low, takes it to the front of the net and would not be denied. On his third attempt, the puck squeezes through and the Huskies take a 5-4 lead. A frenetic final few minutes as the Huskies take a penalty and have to finish the game short-handed. Depoy stands tall in goal, and the Huskies seal the 5-4 victory. Next game for the Huskies is Saturday night 12/17 @ 6pm at the Portsmouth Abbey. Be there. Get loud.
