The Mt Hope Huskies boys hockey team played in their home opener Saturday night at the Portsmouth Abbey, playing host to the Woonsocket/Scituate co-op. After giving up an early power play goal, and trailing 2-0, the Huskies take another penalty. Mt Hope Junior Ryan Cordeiro neutralizes the man advantage by gaining the puck, skating into the offensive zone and scoring shorthanded to make the score 2-1. Woonsocket/Scituate responds with one more in the first and a 3-1 lead after one period. For the second straight game in as many nights, the Huskies trail 3-1 early, and step up to the challenge. Early in the 2nd period, the Huskies go on the power play and work the puck down low. Junior Jack Dolan puts the puck into the net to cut the lead to 3-2. Assists to Cordeiro and Sophomore Cam Rancourt. Minutes later, Rancourt and Dolan break in on a two on one. Rancourt finds Dolan with the pass and he guides it home for the goal and a 3-3 tie. Later in the period, Jack Dolan is not finished. He stays on fire by stealing the puck and blazing through the Woonsocket/Scituate defenders and buries his third goal of the game for a natural hat trick (3 goals in one period) as the Huskies take a 4-3 lead heading into the third period. Midway through the 3rd period, Woonsocket/Scituate responds with a goal and ties the score at 4-4. Only 15 seconds later, the Huskies have an answer. Sophomore defenseman Keegan Hanley keeps the puck in at the blue line and uncorks a blast on net that the goalie saves. In front of the net, the Huskies are battling for positioning, and Rancourt pounces on the rebound and scores for the 5-4 lead. For the second night in a row, it comes down to goaltending and defensive play. Senior goaltender Kyle Depoy locks in and shuts down the Woonsocket/Scituate attack and finishes with 24 saves. In front of Depoy, the defensive corps of Seniors Austin Hogan and Nic Fowler, Juniors Dylan Andrade and James Morreira and Hanley help neutralize the Woonsocket/Scituate attack. Also helping neutralize the attack was the defensive team effort from the forwards including Senior Zach Francis, Juniors Kyrik Cordeiro and Sean Martin and Sophomores James Marshall and Devon Loiselle. The Huskies finish with a 5-4 victory. Next up for the Huskies is another Home game at the Portsmouth Abbey on Tuesday night 12/20 at 6pm vs Johnston/North Providence. Huskies Hockey would like to invite all Mt Hope students and local hockey fans to attend. Be there. Get loud.
