Hogan selected as Hobey Baker Award recipient

Commencing in 2003, the Hobey Baker High School Character Award was established to honor high school hockey players who exemplify the Hobey Baker ideal that "Character Builds Excellence."

Each year, a single senior hockey player from each participating high school (in the 18 states who sponsor high school hockey programs) is selected by his or her coach to be honored by teammates and celebrated by the school and the community for outstanding individual performance on and off the ice.

Last season Austin received the Sportsmanship Award which comprises the following attributes; Conduct as fairness, Respect for one's Opponent, and Graciousness in Winning or Losing. So, it seemed only fitting that he continue to build his responsibility for these qualities into his 2016-17 senior season and fortify his selection as this year's Hobey Baker High School Character Award recipient.

Academically, Austin is enrolled in Advanced Placement courses. He is also Class President as well as a ranking member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for Ice Hockey. He has shown much progress in his ability to enhance his leadership skills by working closely with our coaching staff throughout the season. He is an articulate and extremely intelligent and thoughtful young man, who doesn't always think about himself – his teammates come first. I have had the pleasure of coaching this young student/athlete for the past four seasons and have seen him grow from a small lad, into a confident young man and a mature young man, who is ready to take on more responsibilities as a university student.

I believe Austin exemplifies the qualities outlined in the award(s) criteria, and so I selected him this year. "I am certain he will go a long way in life because of his ability to work through problems, remain positive and focused during critical points of each game". He also makes every effort to maintain a positive attitude, an excellent work ethic, and a will to succeed, no matter how difficult it can be at times. This is part of his overall character".

Austin will receive a personalized commemorative plaque and will also be honored Sunday 5 March 2017 during the Providence Bruins v. Lehigh Valley Phantoms game along with the other award winners from Rhode Island area high schools. He will become one of the winners of this prestigious award, a distinction shared by some of the best players to ever play the game.

In addition, after the game he will also represent Mt. Hope in this year's Skills Competition as well as participate in a 3v3 game immediately following the Skills Competition.

Congratulations Austin; In Recognition of Exemplary Character and Sportsmanship, Your Deeds, His Name, and Inspiration. A Solemn Tradition of Hobey Baker!  Mt. Hope High School's 2017 High School Character Award Winner!
