The Mt Hope Huskies Boys Hockey team played Game One of the their 2 out of 3 semi-final playoff matchup on Friday night vs the Woonsocket/Scituate Co-op at historic Adelard Arena in Woonsocket. Minutes after the puck drops and the action has begun, the doors to the arena burst open and a parade of students come marching. It's the Fan Bus! Carrying the Dog Pound! The Huskies travel well, and kudos to the Mt Hope students who stepped up to the plate to support their team.
Senior Goaltender Kyle Depoy was busy on this night, withstanding an early barrage from the WS attack and making huge saves throughout the night. Late in the second period, the Huskies find themselves down 2-0 as both goaltenders are playing very well. The Huskies dig in. Junior Ryan Cordeiro and Sophomore Cam Rancourt win the battle for the puck down low behind the WS goaltender and take it to the front of the net. The puck squirts through traffic across the slot. Sophomore James Marshall gets to the puck, shoots and scores to cut the deficit to 2-1. At the end of two, both teams go to the locker room for a fresh sheet of ice. The third period is a barrage of shots on net on both ends of the ice. Depoy stands tall in goal for the Huskies making save after save. His counterpart on the other end is playing solid as well. As the Huskies continue to attack and pour shots on goal, they are repeatedly turned away. Late in the third period with just over three minutes remaining, Senior Nic Fowler uncorks a blast from the blue line. Cordeiro is ferocious in front of the net. He gets to the puck and fires it home for the equalizer. The score is tied at 2-2. The third period ends with both teams having opportunities, but repeatedly turned away by quality goaltending.
Now it's time for Free Hockey. Sudden-death Overtime. Four on Four. The first team that scores wins and the game is over. Minds racing. Legs aching. Hearts Pounding. Both on the ice and in the stands. The puck drops. Back and forth action. Both teams getting shots on goal but unable to break through. After seven and a half minutes of breath-taking action, the overtime comes to an end with the score still tied at 2. Now what? You guessed it, double overtime. Put another seven and a half minutes on the board, and let's try it again. A minute and a half into the second overtime, Cordeiro aggressively attacks with a hard forecheck in the offensive zone. Cordeiro is able steal the puck down low from the WS defender and heads to the net. Coming down through the slot is Rancourt. Cordeiro lays out the pass for his teammate. Rancourt fires the puck toward the goal. Could it? Does it? Will it? Did it? The pucks hits the back of the net and the Huskies win 3-2 in Double OT. Depoy makes 46 saves in goal for the Huskies in a busy night's work. Game two of the best of three series is Saturday 3/4 at 4:30pm at the Portsmouth Abbey. Be THERE! Get LOUD!
