While our student-athletes dealt with the crushing blow of sports being canceled this past spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of our fall student-athletes will be back on the field & court this season with the announcement from Governor Raimondo and the Rhode Island Interscholastic League on September 4.
The following Mt. Hope sports were approved by the Governor and the Rhode Island Interscholastic League for team competition this season with new safety modifications: Boys Cross Country, Girls Cross Country, Girls Tennis, Boys Soccer, and Girls Soccer. While Football & Girls Volleyball will not play during the traditional fall season in which they usually do, the RIIL is adopting a four-season model to which those respective seasons will tentatively be held between the winter and spring seasons at a start date to be determined. Sideline Cheer though approved by the Governor's office will wait to coincide with football.
Our Boys Cross Country team looks to continue their great success to which they qualified for the State Meet after a 7-3 season in the Metropolitan Division in the Fall 2019 campaign, along with three student-athletes (Josh DeWolf, Hunter Heyden and Kaden Silva) running personal bests to make it to the Top 10 leader board in Mt. Hope Boys Cross Country history!
Our Girls Cross Country looks to also continue their great success from Fall 2019, led by Hope Tyska, who ran in the New England XC Championship in Manchester, CT a year ago and also posted a personal best to make it to the Top 10 leader board in Mt. Hope Girls Cross Country history. The team went 8-4 in the Metropolitan Division during the Fall 2019 season and qualified for the State Meet.
The Girls Tennis team looks to be the first team in school history to repeat as back-to-back champions after winning the Division II State Championship a year ago with their 4-1 win over Ponaganset after going 12-1 in regular season play. While losing five seniors to graduation, the team will rely on their underclassmen and core group of seniors to continue their winning ways in the upcoming season.
With success on and off the field last year with the first Scholar All-American for the program since the early 2000’s, along with a 9-3-4 record in Division II regular season play, the Boys Soccer program hopes to bounce back from their heartbreaking 1-0 loss to North Smithfield in the Quarterfinals last season.
After a loss to North Kingstown in last year’s Division I Quarterfinals, after going 8-4-3 in Division I regular season play, the Girls Soccer team hopes to avenge that loss with a strong nucleus of underclassmen returning this upcoming season after only graduating three seniors to graduation from the Fall 2019 season.
All the Huskies look to return to their winning ways this upcoming Fall season, but more importantly, return to the games they love after many did not get a chance to play their sport this past spring.
Our Girls Tennis team Head Coach and Captains recently talked to WPRI-TV about the return to being able to play this upcoming season:
